  • Poisson's ratio

    • "Poisson's ratio v" is a measure of the Poisson effect, which is the deformation (expansion or contraction) of material in directions perpendicular to the specific direction of loading in materials science and solid mechanics. The negative of the ratio of transverse strain to axial strain is Poisson's ratio.

    • "v" is the amount of transversal elongation divided by the amount of axial compression for modest values of these changes. The Poisson's ratio of most materials is between 0.0 and 0.5. Poisson's ratio is around 0.5 in soft materials like rubber, where the bulk modulus is larger than the shear modulus.

    • Poisson's ratio is approaching zero in open-cell polymer foams because the cells collapse with compression. The Poisson's ratios of several common solids are in the range of 0.2-0.3. Simeon Poisson, a French mathematician, and physicist are honored with the ratio's name.

    • Poisson's ratio of steel is 0.3
  • Modulus of Rigidity

    • Shear modulus, also known as the Modulus of rigidity, is the ratio of shear stress to shear strain that determines the stiffness of a body. G is frequently used, however, S or μ can also be used.

    • The modulus of rigidity of steel is 0.769*10⁵
  • Permissible Shear Stress

    • The greatest value of shear stress created in a beam at which it approaches the allowable limit of shear stress, or at which fracture propagation begins in the beam is known as the acceptable shear stress. Please keep in mind that this shear stress is caused by the transverse force.
  • Minimum size of Weld

    • The minimum size of the weld for thickness 11mm to 20mm is 5mm
  • Effective Length

    • In fillet weld, the Effective length should be less to 4*thickness of the weld

    • The effective length of the weld = actual length-2*size of weld
  • Minimum Pitch

    • The minimum pitch of the rivet is 2.5 * nominal diameter of the rivet
